Translation Process

Since my client's services are aimed specifically at Austrian filmmakers, authors, and companies, precise localization was essential. This meant deliberately choosing vocabulary and phrasing that resonates with an Austrian readership, for example, using Beistrich instead of Komma for "comma," or incorporating the regionally preferred courteous structure, such as "Gerne erstelle ich für Sie ..."

To ensure a smooth reading flow and keep the visitor of the website engaged throughout, I used strategic connective phrases and rephrased several declarative statements (ending with a full stop) into direct, rhetorical questions. This creates a more conversational and inviting tone that makes Austrian readers feel personally addressed rather than merely informed. 

Take this original Spanish sentence as an example: "Si necesita subtítulos en español para presentar su corto, mediometraje, largometraje o documental a un festival de España, puede contar con [company name]."

I transformed it into the much more dynamic and reader-focused Austrian German: "Sie wollen Ihren Kurz-, Mittellang-, Lang-, oder Dokumentarfilm auf einem Filmfestival in Spanien präsentieren und benötigen dafür spanische Untertitel? [company name] macht es möglich!"

Translation Process

The goal of Health Matters is to provide readers with expert knowledge on a wide range of health topics. While the article includes professional medical insights and specific terminology related to the menstrual cycle, it is written in an accessible, authentic, and empathetic tone.

Therefore, one of the main challenges during the translation process was finding the right balance between 1) maintaining that warm and understanding tone so readers feel supported, 2) avoiding sounding too educational and 3) preserving the seriousness and credibility of the topic. To achieve this, I chose to use the informal Du, while consistently applying accurate medical terminology.  

Moreover, I also paid special attention to key terms. Cycle syncing is a concept that is far more established in the English speaking world. At present, there is no widely accepted German equivalent. Since the English term is commonly used and clearly explained within the article itself, I decided to retain it in the German version.

For medical terms such as estrogen, which can appear in different forms in German, I selected the variant most familiar to the target audience. This choice helps prevent unnecessary confusion and allows readers to stay engaged with the content rather than stumbling over terminology.

Cycle Syncing: How to Understand Your Menstrual Cycle to Reduce Period Symptoms

Fatigue, cramps, trouble sleeping, bloating, mood swings, and changes in appetite. Fluctuating hormone levels throughout the menstrual cycle can cause any or all of these unpleasant symptoms. One way to help manage them and feel your best throughout the month is through a practice called cycle syncing.

Cycle syncing involves being aware of the different phases of your cycle, and adjusting your lifestyle, such as diet, exercise, and sleep habits, to support your body during each phase.

Follicular Phase (Days 1-14)

The follicular phase overlaps with the menstrual phase, also starting on the first day of your period and ends when you begin ovulating, usually lasting about 10 to 14 days. During this phase, the uterine lining thickens, and the follicles in your ovaries grow and develop. One of these follicles will eventually produce a mature egg, which will lead to ovulation.

Nutrition: Since this phase overlaps while you’re experiencing blood loss, making sure you have an iron-rich diet remains important. “As you rebound from the menstrual phase, you may feel more energized due to increasing estrogen and progesterone levels,” says Dr. Simmons. “Proper nutrition can play an important role in how quickly your energy levels bounce back.”

Müdigkeit, Krämpfe, Schlafprobleme, Blähungen, Stimmungsschwankungen und Appetitveränderungen – Schwankende Hormonlevel während des Menstruationszyklus können zu einigen oder all diesen unangenehmen Symptomen führen. Cycle Syncing kann dir dabei helfen, diese Symptome in den Griff zu bekommen und dich das ganze Monat über gut zu fühlen.

Cycle Syncing bedeutet, dir über die verschiedenen Zyklusphasen bewusst zu sein und deinen Lebensstil, sprich deine Ernährung, deine Sportroutine sowie deine Schlafgewohnheiten, so anzupassen, dass sie deinen Körper in jeder Phase unterstützen.

Follikelreifungsphase (Tag 1–14)

Die Follikelreifungsphase überschneidet sich mit der Menstruationsphase. Sie beginnt  am ersten Tag deiner Periode und endet mit dem Eisprung. Sie dauert für gewöhnlich 10 bis 14 Tage. Während dieser Phase wird die Gebärmutterschleimhaut dicker. Gleichzeitig reifen die Follikel in deinen Eierstöcken heran und vergrößern sich. Aus einem der Follikel reift schließlich ein Ei heran, das den Eisprung auslöst.

Ernährung: Da du in dieser Phase sehr viel Blut verlierst, ist es wichtig, dass du dich eisenhaltig ernährst. „Sobald du dich von der Menstruationsphase erholt hast, fühlst du dich möglicherweise energiegeladener, da die Östrogen- und Progesteronlevel in deinem Körper ansteigen,“ so Dr. Simmons. „Die richtige Ernährung kann ein bedeutender Faktor dafür sein, wie schnell deine Energie wieder zurückkommt.“

Translation Process

One challenge I encountered during the translation was the long sentences in the Spanish original. In order to establish a good flow and therefore help the reader better understand and process the sensitive topic, the sentences were shortened. 

Moreover, maintaining an empathetic tone without sounding too promotional or alarmist was crucial, as this strongly influences the reader's experience. Since the text is aimed at people who are dealing with adolescents experiencing mental health difficulties or challenging behaviours, it was important to avoid language that might cause unnecessary concern or pressure. 

Lastly, I took the cultural framing of the text into account.  Concepts such as academic pressure, family expectations, or the role of specialized day hospitals may not map one to one culturally. For the German translation, I therefore ensured a clear, respectful, and explanatory style that would resonate appropriately with the target audience. 

Desmotivación en los y las adolescentes

Uno de los factores más comunes que influyen en la falta de motivación es la presión académica. Los adolescentes se ven sometidos a altas expectativas en la escuela, lo que puede generar estrés y ansiedad. Muchas veces sienten que deben cumplir con estándares demasiado exigentes, lo que los lleva a perder el interés y la confianza en sus propias capacidades. Además, el sistema educativo tradicional no siempre logra captar su atención, ya que en muchos casos no se adapta a sus intereses ni a las nuevas formas de aprendizaje.

Las emociones juegan un papel fundamental en la motivación. La autoestima baja, la inseguridad y el miedo al fracaso son factores que pueden frenar el entusiasmo de un adolescente. Si sienten que sus esfuerzos no valen la pena o que nunca serán lo suficientemente buenos, es probable que pierdan la motivación para intentar mejorar. En muchos casos, detrás de la desmotivación se esconden problemas emocionales más profundos, como la ansiedad o la depresión, que requieren una atención adecuada y apoyo profesional.

Einer der häufigsten Faktoren von Antriebslosigkeit bei Jugendlichen ist der schulische Leistungsdruck. Die Jugendlichen sind hohen Anforderungen ausgesetzt, die zu Stress und Ängsten führen können. Sie haben oft das Gefühl, zu hohen Standards gerecht werden zu müssen, was dazu führt, dass sie das Interesse und das Vertrauen in ihre eigenen Fähigkeiten verlieren. Außerdem weckt das traditionelle Bildungssystem nicht immer die Aufmerksamkeit der Jugendlichen, da es weder ihren Interessen noch den veränderten Lernformen entspricht.

Emotionen spielen eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Motivation von Jugendlichen. Das geringe Selbstwertgefühl, Unsicherheiten und die Angst vor dem Scheitern sind Faktoren, die Jugendliche in ihrem Enthusiasmus einschränken können. Haben sie das Gefühl, dass sich ihre Anstrengungen nicht lohnen oder dass sie nie gut genug sein werden, verlieren sie höchstwahrscheinlich die Motivation, besser zu werden. In vielen Fällen stecken hinter der Antriebslosigkeit tiefliegende Emotionen wie Ängstlichkeit oder Depression. Diese bedürfen einer angemessenen Betreuung und professioneller Hilfe.
